Eines der absoluten männerfotografischen Highlights des langsam zu Ende gehenden Jahres ist ohne Zweifel das Foto-Buch „Boys of St. Petersburg“ – eine große Hommage an die Jungs von St. Petersburg

In der aktuellen MÄNNER stellen wir das Buch vor und unser Cover schmückt eine der Fotografien des fotografischen Meisterwerks. Gestern wurde nun das Buch auch im Schwulen Museum (Berlin) unter Anwesenheit des Fotografen Michael Andrew präsentiert.

Andrews Fotos sind von gefühlvoller Präzision und atemberaubender Kunstfertigkeit. Während seiner mehrmonatigen Winterreisen in die Stadt an der Newa gelang es ihm, die unschuldige Schönheit und Anmut der Modelle einzufangen.

Schwierigkeiten mit den Behörden in Russland

Humorvoll und anschaulich berichtete der gebürtige Australier von der Enstehungsgeschichte der St.Petersburg-Fotografien. Während er bei seinem ersten Besuch (2005) in St. Petersburg ungestört von den Behörden arbeiten konnte, bekam er nach Inkrafttreten der sog. Propaganda-Gesetzgebung große Schwierigkeiten.

Jungs in ihrem originären Umfeld

Mit zu dieser Geschichte gehört auch die Inspiration, die er von Mischa Gawronski erhielt, der den Verlag des Buches federführend betreut hat. Gleich im Vorfeld war Gawronski klar: wir wollen nicht die cleane und unpersönliche Atmosphäre internationaler Hotels als Umfeld, in dem sich professionelle Modells ablichten lassen. Stattdessen sollte das originäre Umfeld der Jungs die Bilder mitprägen. Da viele der Protagonisten noch bei den Eltern leben oder in Unterkünften des Militärs oder Studentenwohnungen, war diese Grundidee ebenfalls mit größeren strategischen Schwierigkeiten verbunden.
Aber diese Idee war es, die – neben dem Talent Andrews – dafür sorgte, dass ein einmaliger Bildband entstand – mit Fotos, die jetzt schon im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes Museumsqualitäten aufweisen.

Im Rahmen der Buchvorstellung und Ausstellungseröffnung konnte der Veranstalter auch eine Delegation schwul-lesbischer Aktivisten und Verbände begrüßen. Verbunden ist damit, so die Veranstalter, „stärkere Bande zwischen den Partnerstädten Berlin und Moskau knüpfen zu können.“ Auch bekannte Kollegen Andrews wie Henning von Berg oder Antonio Rodriguez waren gekommen, um die Buchpräsentation mit zu erleben.

As the year draws to a close, one of it’s absolute male photographic highlights is without question the Photo Book “Boys of St. Petersburg” – a great tribute to the boys of St. Petersburg, Russia.

In the current MÄNNER Magazine we feature the book with a seven page spread of images and one of the photographic masterpieces graces the cover. Yesterday, the book was introduced in the “Schwulen Museum” (Berlin) in the presence of the photographer Michael Andrew.

Andrew’s photos are emotionally precise and exhibit breathtaking artistry. During his months-long Winter sojourns in the city on the Neva, he managed to catch the innocent beauty and charm of the boys.

Difficulties with the Authorities in Russia

The Australian born photographer spoke candidly and humorously about the creation of his St. Petersburg images. During his first visit to St. Petersburg in 2005 he was able to work undisturbed by the authorities, however, with the passing of the so-called Homo-Propaganda legislation things became more challenging.

Additionally, this story is also about the inspiration that he received from Mischa Gawronski, who oversaw the publishing and was in editorial charge of the book. From the start it was clear to Gawronski: we do not want the clean and impersonal atmosphere of international hotels as environments in which professionally photographed models would be shown. Instead, the original environment of the boys should shape the images. Since many of the protagonists still live with their parents or in military barracks or in shared student accommodation, this idea was also associated with greater strategic difficulties.
But the idea was that – with the talents of Michael Andrew – it would be assured that a unique photo book was born – with images already in the truest sense of the word “museum exhibit quality”.

As part of the book launch and exhibition opening, the organizers welcomed a delegation of Russian gay and lesbian activists and organizations. Connecting this so that the organizers were able, “to develop stronger ties between the partner cities of Berlin and Moscow.” Michael Andrew’s well known colleagues Henning von Berg and Antonio Rodriguez (who also designed the book cover graphics)  were also in attendance to experience the book presentation.
